The Power of Compassion

(Written in response to school shootings) ...Science is teaching us that when an event causes a message to be sent to our brain, it is received in two places. One part of our brain sends out an automatic response over which we have little or no control; but the other part of our brain is capable of being influenced by our beliefs, attitudes and values—those characteristics which best identify us as spiritual beings. In those moments when we are in danger of getting stuck in a destructive state of mind, compassion can intervene and give us access to new thoughts and feelings as they emerge inside us.
